WHAT WE DO

Rescue Homeless / Person Engaged in Beggary

A group of staff, volunteers, and police officers visit the streets and encourage the street dwellers to seek help from Udayam. Destitute discharged from hospitals are also admitted at Udayam homes. A standard operating procedure is followed for the admission of new residents and other interventions.

Psychosocial Assessment

After admission at Udayam homes, a psychosocial assessment will be done using a bio-psychosocial framework. Based on this, appropriate interventions will be planned. Police verification of all residents is also done.

Health Care

Medical care is provided through government health systems. The DMHP team conducts psychiatric consultations every month. IMHANS consultants supervise counseling, psychotherapy, family interventions, etc.

De-addiction Services

There are provisions such as the Alcoholics Anonymous group (AA group) where individuals who are addicted to substances can come together to share and resolve their issues with addiction.

Family Counselling

Broken families and conflicts were some of the major causes of homelessness. If the resident identifies the family as an ideal space and wishes to resolve familial issues, the staff will contact the family through known resources. Family counseling is facilitated over the phone, and in some cases, home visits are facilitated.

Reuniting with Families

In certain cases, the possibility of reintegration with families is considered, and possible residents were reunited with their families after necessary counseling. Travel facilities were arranged with the support of KSRTC and the Indian Railway.

Skill Development Programs

Udayam facilitates employment generation and better opportunities for its residents through skill-based training programs in various sectors. These programs enhance the residents' capabilities and accelerate their behavioral transitions.

Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities were facilitated through newspaper advertisements and other means. Different employers interviewed potential employees in specific areas. An occupational profile was created, and meetings were conducted with potential employees.

Support to Continue Education

A literacy program named “Jnanodayam” was initiated with the support of Kerala Literacy Mission, Kozhikode and DIET. Libraries were started in the homes and equivalency certificate exams were facilitated.

Legal Aid Services

The majority of the residents do not have ID cards. Residents who stayed for six months or more were provided Aadhar and Voter ID cards. Similar legal aid regarding their rights and provisions was also given.

Library

All four homes have a library facility.

SMILE Scheme

We are providing the services under the SMILE scheme of the MoSJE.
